40Plus Channel Guidelines

You will find that 40plus is a very lenient channel. All we expect is common courtesy and respect for fellow chatters. The following guidelines are found in almost any chat channel.

Channel Operators carry a @ in front of their nicks and are there to make #40plus a safe and fun place to make new friends and enjoy common chat.
• Report any harrassment either in the channel or in private to an OP (via private message) if you find it offensive to you.
• Please do NOT put an @OP on ignore. If the OP is trying to speak to you and it appears you are ignoring them, you will be kicked.
• Anyone consistently arguing with an OP or an OP decision will be 'escorted from the channel'!
• We are aware that Web TV users cannot see an @nick in the channel. If you are a Web TV user, please familiarise yourself with the following @OP nicknames.
40plus Channel Operators are:
Arkie, aWidow, Babsy, BlackHawk, BrOkEn^WiNgS^, Catlady, Clean, DebraMarie, Det, DT, EsotericNuance, GeorgieGirl, Greg, Paula/Krazee, LadyH (Founder), Marie1110, Mike, OceanAngel, Poge, Philjob, PrincessSandy, Purl, RubyQ, RumRunner, Seriouslynow, ^SimplyRed^, Stagman, Strider, Sueper, Teyler, ToothFairy, Witchy1,

40plus Temp Channel Operators are:
Bobbie-Pooh, Cookie, DaSHEFoxy, Digger, Jazzman, Michigan-man-52, MysteryMan, Sculptor,

1. No blatant bad language in the channel.

2. Nicknames:- Please don't enter the room with a nickname that is considered in Bad Taste or Offensive. This means anything clearly sexual, prejudiced, anti-religious, discriminatory or using the name of infamous serial killers or terrorists. You will avoid unnecessary confrontation if you just choose a more acceptable nickname. You will be given the chance to change your nick if you enter. If you refuse, then you will be removed from the room until you do. Also please don't enter the room using Guest. If you are having trouble or don't know how to change your nickname, just ask a room Op for help. Common sense should prevail when you are choosing a nickname for a chatroom.

3. No harrassing of anyone - either OPS or other users in the channel or in private. You will be warned of harrassment before being kicked. If the harrassment continues, you will be kicked from the channel. Repetitive harrassment from inside or outside the channel will result in a channel ban and possibly a k-line from the server.

4. Deliberate flooding & nuking will result in a ban from the channel and a possible k-line from the server.

5. No advertising of other channels or commercial URL's either in the channel, or by messaging members at random with the intent of recruitment..it's considered bad etiquette.

6. No bots or clones unless they are registered #40plus channel bots.

7. No 'lurking' in the channel. If you are not a #40plus @OP, please do not leave your nick 'parked' in the channel if you plan on being away from your computer for more than 1 hour. People would like to chat with you, not stare at your vacant nick. Unresponsive nicks will be removed from the channel. Continually ignoring this request will result in a channel ban. This is a chat room, not a bus station!

8. We would appreciate you not being logged into multiple channels when you visit #40plus as we would very much like to have your attention while you are there. You will be asked to remove the other channels if you are logged into them, so to avoid any unpleasant confrontations, it would be appreciated if you would drop the channels before entering. This is an old rule that has become necessary to enforce so please do not argue about it with the channel Ops or you will be removed from the channel.

9. Foreign speaking chatters are welcome in #40plus, we understand the need to want to improve their English sometimes and we are happy to help in this case. If you choose to have a long conversation with other similar speaking chatters in a foreign language, we recommend the parties go private or join a private channel to hold their conversation uninterupted. Not everyone is tolerant of foreign conversations going on in a busy channel and this will avoid unecessary confrontations.

10. CAPS denote shouting and is considered rude in any chat channel.

11. No repetitive typing over and over.

12. 40plus gets extremely busy at times and we would really appreciate everyone shortening their hi's, bye's and wb's (Welcome Back's). Try to use a general 'Hello Room and Goodbye Room' post if you can. Having 30 people all saying hello and having someone reply back to 30 nicks gets a little tiresome and is very disruptive to the flow of chat. Try to be satisfied with a couple of Hello's when you enter the room and don't be offended if you don't receive a personal greeting from everyone in the room. This also goes for wb's, especially when someone is constantly falling off and rejoining the room. Please try to limit these types of greetings during busy periods.

13. #40plus is a 'G' rated channel NOT a sex channel. There are no sex channels on Starchat and we recommend you try Dalnet or Undernet and do a channel listing if this is your preference. Please don't join with the intention of just 'picking someone up'. Anyone found distributing uninvited pornographic material or naked pics in #40plus will be banned and reported to Starchat.

14. We DO NOT have an age restriction in 40plus. We tend to judge people, even young ones, on how we find them. Sometimes there are more mature young chatters than adults and sometimes young people come in to see their parents. If you are uncomfortable chatting with younger persons in the room, then we suggest you modify your conversation so that it's more suitable and not offensive.

15. Popups are to be kept small and at a minimum when the channel is busy. You are free to show larger popups with a prior warning only when the channel is relatively empty. Please consider MAC users and some Web TV users that cannot see popups properly and are just flooded with a screen full of numbers.

16. Please turn off all auto-greets when entering #40plus.

17. Wavs and mp3's are freely played and shared in #40plus.

18. We recommend you turn off your DCC auto-accept in a channel and never accept a file from someone you do not know as they may contain viruses.

19. Starchat offers Free Services to safeguard your Nicknames. If you are concerned about people using your Nickname, then it is advised that you Register your Nick on Starchat. Only Registered Nicknames can
a) Register a channel
b) Leave a memo to someone
c) Receive auto-ops in a channel.
40plus will NOT kick people because they are cloning your nick. This is entirely a personal preference and safeguards are there for individuals who choose to use them. Protection of your nick is not the responsibility of the channel.
HOW TO REGISTER YOUR NICK
1. Make sure you are wearing the nick that you intend to register.
2. Type this command: /msg nickserv register emailaddress password
(enter your valid email address there and choose a password).
3. You will be sent an activation email by Starchat.
4. Follow the instructions on the email to complete your registration.
5. After you have completed those steps and successfully registered your nick, it is advised that you set a GUARD on it as an added precaution.
6. Type this command: /msg nickserv set GUARD ON
(This will cause anyone who tries to use your nick to identify themselves. If they don't supply the correct password, they won't be permitted to use the nick).
You are permitted to have 3 registered nicks on Starchat.

Most of these chat guidelines are pretty standard in the majority of chat channels. Good chatters are always considerate of other people and respectful of channel rules which can differ from channel to channel. Starchat does not have jurisdiction over channel rules. Starchat Network rules and Channel rules are separate entities. Starchat will not intervene over a channel rule dispute or a banning decision. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask one of the channel operators or anyone in the channel. You will find most people in #40plus are helpful and tolerant of newcomers. Newcomers to IRC are always recommended to join #starchat or a #newbies channel first before joining busy channels to learn basic command procedures.

BECOMING A 40PLUS @OP
Many people are curious to know how one can become a 40plus OP. Firstly, please don't waste your time asking to be an op, because they are never given that way. @Ops are chosen primarily for their loyalty to 40plus. This means that they don't chat anywhere else. Longevity and regularity in the channel are the next key issues. A person might not stay long when they visit, but when they choose to chat, they will do it in 40plus and has probably been doing it for many years. Finally, a person's personality and good judgement. These are characteristics that are obvious to anyone, but mostly they must be obvious to current 40plus Ops. There have been many times that a relatively new person has been made an op, based solely on their good judgement and dedication to the channel.

Ops are placed when necessary and they are elected by the current team of Ops. Therefore, it isn't wise to be continually argumentative with a 40plus Op. They are the ones that nominate people that they feel have the qualities to be a sensible Op in 40plus. When new Ops are required, the current team submits names of people that they feel would qualify - those names are then voted on. Temp Ops are normally people that are being assessed. 40plus Ops have many more rules to live by than normal members and it is more often than not, a thankless task. It takes a special kind of person to have to deal with recurring situations but these kinds of people are usually obvious to channel owners and Ops.
Webtv users do not have the option of having an Op Control Panel, so unfortunately at this time, they are excluded from elections.
