During Thanksgiving weekend 1999, Evelyn visited the Wall memorial in Washington, DC. This visit and the impact it had, changed her life.
When checking her guest book on her web site, she clicked through to a visitor’s home page to return the compliment. She noticed that the person who signed ahead of her had a POW/MIA site. She then clicked through to that site. The site impressed her, and having just made the visit to the Wall, she signed the guest book. It did not work. There was an icon to email the Webmaster and she did so, telling him the guestbook was down.
Bob emailed back thanking Evelyn for telling him about his book. He then emailed again telling her he had fixed it and asked her to sign again. She returned to the page and signed the book, and then emailed she had done so. Another email came to her thanking her for doing so. By this time, Bob and Evelyn had been emailing several times a week for nearly a month. Then silence. Evelyn had gotten “the bug” at Christmas. Bob emailed once more asking if she was all right and telling her how much he missed her notes. He also asked if she had the ICQ program. They then exchanged ICQ numbers and began to chat daily.
Through these chats, they found they had much in common. They liked to read, do computer work, they are both into family history and genealogy – even have family ties in Eastern Europe. They love to watch movies and music is vital in both of their lives. They also discovered they are both divorced Catholics. Following all these ICQ chats and emails, they exchanged phone numbers and started talking on the phone about once a week. Both enjoyed the other’s voice and they found they laughed a lot when talking. Humor also is important to both. They had exchanged photos of their pets – Bob has an African Gray Parrot and Ev has her spoiled rotten pound yapper. Now it was time to exchange photos. Each thought the other attractive. And the rest – as they say – is history!
Ev explained to Bob that she spent a lot of time in IRC Chat in a channel called 40Plus. She invited Bob to the channel. She gave him the URL to download Pirch and he did so. Once there, he enjoyed the company of the chatters and started to collect his own wavs, MP3’s, and popups. Finally the time came to meet in person. On 6 June 2000, they met in MN where Ev was staying with friends about 200 miles from Bob’s home. They could tell at once that all they had felt via chatting was real. Later in June, Bob visited Ev at her home in FL. On 22 June 2000 they became engaged. They had planned for a Thanksgiving wedding. This was not to be. Bob’s business in MN concluded much sooner than he anticipated and he was back in FL by the end of July! They married in a small ceremony on 12 August 2000. The official who married them had been Ev’s captain when she worked at the police department. Her brother was there from Ohio. One of Ev’s sorority sisters was her attendant and Bob’s attendant was the sister’s husband.

Ev's brother and sister-in-law gif"ted Bob and Ev with a trip to England for a wedding present. They departed for Gatwick on 27 October 2000. During the 10 day trip, they stayed with Lills and Pots - two 40Plus chatters from Quarterdeck days - in the countryside near Bath.
They loved touring that area with their favorite spots being Bath, Eddington, and Stonehenge. The rest of the time was spent touring London. They stayed at Imperial Hotel on Russell Square while there. Museums, churches, The Tower, Big Ben, theatre, changing of the guard, etc. were all seen. Ev enjoyed the shopping - of course - and Bob enjoyed the pubs! They both enjoyed the scenery and the people.
It was the dream trip of a lifetime for them. They plan to return within the next three years and spend an entire month taking in the entire UK. |
