Comments: I retired from US Steel Minntac Operations in Virginia, MN in 1997, where I'd worked (?) for 25 years. Then in July, 2002 went to work for MSN Tech Support in Palatka, FL. The end of Feb. 2004 that job was sent to Manila due to the wonderful idea of "outsourcing". I got called back the end of June for JP Morgan Chase Manhattan Home Finance support. The beginning of Sept. again my job was "outsourced" to India. Now, I'm just sitting on my butt and collecting Social Security......

My Military History
Served aboard the USS Hornet CVS-12 as a Radarman, from 1963 - 1967

USNTC, San Diego, CA: Enlisted US Navy and spent my 21st birthday in boot camp.
Mar 1963 - Oct 15 1960

After Boot Camp, I went to ET "A" School, Treasure Island, San Francisco. After completion, I was flown to Hawaii to go to OCS (Over Choppy Seas). I spent 2 weeks in Pearl Harbor, lounging around waiting for my ship, The USS Hornet CVS-12. The Hornet was an ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) ship. I got aboard the ship which was bound for the WestPAC cruise. I was assigned to OI division (Operations Intelligence).
I was a Radarman, commonly called "Scope Dope". Spent a very uneventful 10 months in and around the Orient. Had a few storms that we went through. On one occasion the ship looked like a floating iceberg in the Sea of Japan. Cold, wind, snow and rain, our aircraft were frozen to the flightdeck. She came back stateside and went into drydock in San Francisco for a
year. A $40 Million overhaul was done on the old girl and the major cost was for a Sonar Dome.
While in the yards, I went to school on Treasure Island a couple of more times. Once for shipboard firefighting and the other was a school for operating and maintaining the radar. After the yards, and a couple of Operation Readiness Inspections, we went overseas with a couple of Battle Efficiency awards.
This time we went to Vietnam. Several times a day we were overflown by Russian Bombers. On one of our breaks from the "Zone" we went to the Philippines where some of us volunteered for "Jungle Survival Training". Then back to Nam. One bad thing that happened, we did have a plane with a crew of 4 get shotdown in the Haiinan area. No idea if the men survived and were captured or if they were killed.
After leaving Nam, we went to Sydney, Australia for a little R&R. On the way there, we steamed through some of the historic areas of WWII. Just like stepping back in history. Whenever we would get into an historic area, the Skipper who was a WWII
veteran would tell all about what happened there. After leaving Oz, we headed back to the states, where I spent an uneventful year of some short voyages to Hawaii and around the states.
In March of 67 the ship was to deploy for Nam again. In February all of us "Short timers" got an early out so the Navy didn't have to pay our way back to the states.
