To Our Friend,Trapper
Dedicated by 'Greg.
I guess us who take the highway,
Are a different breed of men,
With a special kind of feeling,
For the ones who we call friend.

It`s an arm around your shoulder,
When the morning comes too soon,
And a late night conversation,
In a thousand motel rooms.

It`s a flood in California,
And a snowstorm in St. Paul,
And it takes a tough old soldier,
To keep going through it all

But we`re so much less than human,
When we lose one of our own.....
Now there`s one more empty saddle
This old cowboy has gone home.

My Military History
Lackland AFB, TX: Basic Training
June 15 1956 - July 17 1956

Francis E. Warren AFB, WY: Teletype Operator Training and Crypto School
July 31 1956 - Oct 15 1960
After leaving here, I went home to South Carolina on 30 days leave. I left home November 14, 1956 on my way to San Francisco, CA to board the USS McDaniels ship to the Philippine Islands. I had 21 days at sea and in those 21 days I had the time of my life!
I met a Navy Officer's daughter that was the same age as me and when she told her father about me, he made arrangements with my Squadron commander for me to join her and her family at night on the upper decks of the ship so we could be with each other. Once arriving at Subic Bay in Manila, we parted company and I haven't seen her since. Think that may have been my loss! We did write for a while, but one weekend I made plans to go and see her and when I arrived at Subic I was informed that the family had been transferred back to the States. Darn Navy anyway!

Clark AFB, Philippines: Teletype Operator
Jan 6 1957 - June 14 1957
I received orders to report to Shaw AFB in Sumter SC 45 days later. The Air Force flew us back to Travis AFB in California, and that is when I first had my experience with hitchhiking across the USA. It took me 7 days to to hitchhike from Bakersfield CA to South Carolina. I wouldn't even think of doing that in this day and age!

Shaw AFB, SC: 29th Air Recon Group
Aug 21 1957 - May 1960
I had been reassigned to Air Recon so I didn't do teletype here, but did learn how to take and develop aerial rolls of film. I enjoyed that as it was as top secret as being a teletype operator. I stayed at Shaw AFB until I was Separated on May 15, 1960.

Discharged: Rank: Airman 1st Class - 1964

I loved it in the Philippines and was going to re-enlist and try to go back, but they wouldn't let me. I took my discharge instead and here I am today. I made a big mistake by not staying in though. I have kicked my butt just about everyday for that mistake, but I was young and wanted to see the outside world. Wow...what a mess it is in! Today, I recommend any young person that joins the service to make a career of it.
